Medical Debt Pro Publica
Attached is an article from Pro Publica that shows just how savage things can get in the collection of medical debt.
Perceptive historians describe the constant state of war between debtors and creditors. Cases like this one in Kansas have the force and cruelty right out in the open.
There is a hopeful note, though. These cases occurred before Kansas approved the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act in 2020. Medicaid is far from perfect, but it is probably the greatest anti-debt program in American history. Debt enforcement cases have plummeted in every state where Medicaid steps in to help the poor.
